I am exploring the options to collect statistics for Ports & LUNs using Hitachi SMI-S.
Kindly let me know whether Hitachi SMI-S supports this or not?
Are there any other ways to collect these statistics?
Yes, HCS does not support SMI-S for HUS VM. For that you need to use the embedded SMI-S provider. The SMI-S support is essentially the same.
You will need to install the SMI-S license key on the HUS VM SVP. There's no additional cost for the provider.
You will then need to configure Performance Monitor to collect performance data for the CUs & LDEVs you want. You would use the IP address of the SVP.
You can use Hitachi Tuning Manager for achieving this.
Could you please point me to some documents on Tuning Manager?
You can access the documents from https://portal.hds.com
You have to download the Software Documentation Library (SDL), This will have the guide for all the products.
SMI-S as far as I know enables management of Storage Arrays only.
For port and lun stats upgrade to HCS 8.x and use the HCS REST API.
may i know when the HCS 8.x is available?
HCS 8 is available for download from https://portal.hds.com
Do you mean is it through HiCommand DM REST API or Tuning Manager REST API?
Could you be more specific on this?
The Hitachi SMI-S provider has the following performance metrics available. If you need more than this, then you'll want to look into Tuning Manager.
Does Hitachi SMI-S provide any latency-related performance metrics now?
I looked at some of the SMI-S profiles implemented for performance data collection. I don't see Hitachi is supported the bulk data collection using manifestCollection.
It will be difficult to query statistics per volume basis as there will be huge volumes on a storage system.
Any idea when will this be supported?
We don't support the GetStatisticsCollection method, but we do support the default manifest collection. That does require some extra work to association the data to the volume. As of now, there are no plans to support the method. With enough interest, that could change.
I got a brand new HUS VM and tried getting statistics from SMI-S but values are always showing as 0.
I followed the steps mentioned in the smis configuration guide like, installing the Hitachi Device Manager agent on the host connected to HUS VM and also installed CCI. I also exported command device to the same host.
Still i am not seeing the stats.
BTW, my HCS server is running on a VM (VMware vCenter) and agent is pointed to this server.
Am i missing anything on my setup?
Thank you Steve for the information. Is there a support matrix like document to know more details about this?
I would like to know whether SMI-S supports VSP array.
Could you please point me to configuration guide for Performance Monitor?
Thanks in advance.
I am able to figure out the Performance monitor and now i am able to see statistics for our arrays.
Thank you for your help in deed.
Good! Glad I could help.
When i am validating VSP array to collect statistics, i am not seeing stats for Front end ports.
Here is what i am trying:
associator Instances on "FC Port" CIM Instance reference and association class as "CIM_ElementStatisticalData" and the result class as "CIM_BlockStorageStatisticalData".
Your help is greatly helpful to me.
Any idea why the stats are not working for VSP array by using the association of the data to the volume?
I am facing issue with stats collection for VSP array and it looks like the profiles are not implemented properly. Hence i am not seeing the stats using embedded SMIS Provider running on VSP array.
There is no clear documentation on this to confirm whether stats are supported on VSP array using SMI-S or not.
I am stuck with this. Kindly help me or share me some resources where i can get the information.
I have a few questions. Are you getting any results at all? Or are you getting results but the values are all zeros?
What tool are you using to talk to the SMI-S provider? And which specific CIM/SMI-S commands?
I am not sure why it didn't work earlier but now everything seems to be working. All set.
Thank you for your help.
Hi, I have the same problem.
I've collected 3 kind of statistics Array, FCPort and Volume according to this document : http://www.hds.com/assets/pdf/hitachi-command-suite-xml-api-to-smi-s-cim-api-transition-guide.pdf
I get the results with a lot of missing value in mandatory fields like iotimecounter required to calculate any IOPS.
Here is my result for HITACHI_BlockStatisticalDataFCPort
(but have the same issue with HITACHI_BlockStatisticalDataStorageSystem and HITACHI_BlockStatisticalDataStorageVolume) :
Any idea where to get statistical data for whole array, each FC port and each volume ?
For information I had no issues with HP storage arrays (several 3PAR 7400 and 3PAR 7200).
Your help will be apreciated.
